An Argument for Taking a Break

When I started this blog four years ago, there were a few things I told myself I’d never do. One was sharing junk posts – where the writing was crap and the topic uninteresting – basically I didn’t want to half-ass it. It’s a requirement I believe I’m guilty of failing many times. The other thing I didn’t want to do was take a break. I’d try reading other blogs and see a static “we’re not here right now” post, and it made me angry. What was the point in not having a blog if you weren’t going to keep up with it?, I thought. Those people were lazy and I never wanted to be that type of slacker. Never ever ever. Every week since then – for four and a half years – I’ve written and shared a post. Sometimes even more than one per week. And quite frankly, […]

The “How We Met Story” And How I Got My New Last Name

Like any couple, my husband and I are asked – like, hundreds of times per day – how we met. People are interested. They want to know how we found each other. What circumstances in the universe that brought two strangers together. And at what point we decided it was forever – you know, the whole love story bit. All of the parts right until “happily ever after,” because after that it’s just the boring sections of life. Why else would fairytales use it as their closer? But our answer is always the same. Or rather, our separate answers are always the same. I fumble a little. While Bo, my now-husband, goes straight for the jugular. He tells them that we met online, and it was through Plenty of Fish. Because he has no fears, and I’m not as quick to admit to my semi-questionable choice in dating sites – no offense PoF, […]

I’m Bad at Babies
Posted by Bethaney - Tagged , ,

Shocker, I know. Everyone was super surprised to read that title. That I, the baby whisperer, am claiming to not know about infants. Or how to care for them, or dress them, or talk in that high-pitched voice that they seem to understand, but gets on adults’ nerves. Just kidding! That was sarcasm, all of it. I don’t think anyone in the history of ever meeting me is surprised by that title statement. They’re probably surprised I haven’t said it sooner. That is, assuming they hadn’t heard it already. It’s not that I hate babies or want nothing to do with them. It’s that I don’t quite know how they work; I’m out of practice. And really never have been in practice. By the time you get used to helping with one (a family member, for instance), they’re onto the next confusing stage. And you have to learn what to […]

This is My (Glorious) New Calendar
Posted by Bethaney - Tagged , , ,

Some days email is the worst thing to happen to me. Like on this very day that I’m writing this post – where people just cannot get enough of me. And are looking for every excuse in the world to get one of my not-so-incredible responses – even if it’s just business necessary; actually, almost all of them are. Other days, electronic correspondence is the best thing – or rather second-best thing – that’s happened in weeks. Like when JoAnn sent me a coupon code for a free customizable calendar. Yep, a free online-made calendar from a craft-supply store. No idea why, but sometimes it’s best not to ask questions when great things come along, I’ve decided. (BTW, JoAnn, thanks for the coupon – I’ll be sure to buy an extra skein of yarn (or 12) the next time I walk in. Which will probably be about 10 minutes after […]
