An Argument for Taking a Break

When I started this blog four years ago, there were a few things I told myself I’d never do. One was sharing junk posts – where the writing was crap and the topic uninteresting – basically I didn’t want to half-ass it. It’s a requirement I believe I’m guilty of failing many times. The other thing I didn’t want to do was take a break. I’d try reading other blogs and see a static “we’re not here right now” post, and it made me angry. What was the point in not having a blog if you weren’t going to keep up with it?, I thought. Those people were lazy and I never wanted to be that type of slacker. Never ever ever. Every week since then – for four and a half years – I’ve written and shared a post. Sometimes even more than one per week. And quite frankly, […]

The Biggest Distractions on the Internet
Posted by Bethaney - Tagged , ,

As a computer-based worker, there are bound to be a thing or two that distract me any give day. And then there are the ones that distract me every day. The struggle of having too much to do and not enough time to surf it all is way real. Especially when I should be working instead. Here are the biggest offenders: Wikipedia I started off reading that movie description and ended up reading about potential Olympic locations, and about the origin of the games themselves. Two hours have passed and I have no idea how I got here or what roads I took. Someone pull me out of this wormhole, please. Pinterest What a wormhole. An amazing, addicting wormhole. All of Social Media Where I half care, half want to be distracted from work. Old Blogs They could be mine, they couldn’t be anyone’s. But they suck me in and […]

Someone Spit Gum on My Car Five Months Ago And it’s Still There
Posted by Bethaney - Tagged , , , ,

It was July. A hot summer day in which one was carefully about how quickly they adjusted the radio. So as to not get burned. It was also a day I worked from a fairly questionable McDonald’s. I was new to town and branching out with the locals seemed like the neighborly thing to do. Even if it meant drinking day-old iced tea and listening to the manager talk about her manicures a little too loudly. My judgments aside, however, it’s a work session that turned out pretty well. The Internet did its job by connecting me to websites, deadlines were met, and all-in-all, my to-do list got checked through. Success any way you look at it. Then I walked outside. And saw someone had spit chewed gum on my car. Orange. Which is probably some fruity computer-made flavor (I didn’t smell it to find out). Like any normal would […]

Why Don’t I Have an Advice Column?
Posted by Bethaney - Tagged , , , ,

This week I found out one of my favorite email columnists was quitting her job. Or rather, leaving her keyboard for one that’s greener. Which just means she’s writing for something/one different now. Her name is Emily AKA Prudie, and I have been reading her column on Slate for years. It’s a setup where people write in about their strange and unusual problems – sometimes simply to complain. And she puts most of them in their place – sometimes letting writers know they’re right, other times pointing out how wrong they are. It’s an incredible form of entertainment. No, I didn’t agree with her 100% of the time, and no I’m not really over how she ignored my email asking whether or not it was ok to give a single (bigger) gift for a shower and wedding. But that doesn’t mean I wont miss her. In reading this announcement, I […]

The Pros and Cons of Early Mornings
Posted by Bethaney - Tagged , , ,

This blog is being penned at 5:30 am. On a Monday. Which feels like a real accomplishment. (She said, patting herself on her own back.) But seriously, I’m not even upset about being up. The cause? Prepping for a day of impromptu babysitting,* and still doing work … before afternooning with video games and park visits. (And hopefully napping. But can I also sleep? Is that being irresponsible? Once when I was visiting Hilde, who is a pro nanny, we both slept straight through naptime – hung over – and set an alarm so we weren’t zonked when the parents came home. Us and the kids were absolutely out.) Anyway, sometimes I wake up early and get things done. One of those “things” is rarely work on account of there being all day to get to the office, AKA second bedroom. But today, it is work. Though there’s still an […]

The Name Game: Changing Half of Everything
Posted by Bethaney - Tagged , , ,

One of my biggest character flaws is making sweeping statements without knowing all of the facts. Sometimes I mean said statements, sometimes they are jokes, and other times I’m just jumping to conclusions for the time-being, quickly changing my mind soon after. It’s a reality that’s made me learn to take my own opinions with a grain of salt. Because not only am I judgmental, I’m bad at making non-committal small talk. It could be one or the other or both at any given moment. One such judgment I’ve made – for years – is about ladies with two last names. Hyphening their surnames for one reason or another. Or those who don’t take their spouse’s name at all. Whether an inability to let go of the past or trying to make their name more stand out-ish, I probably called you out. But now that I’m married and trying to […]
