An Argument for Taking a Break

When I started this blog four years ago, there were a few things I told myself I’d never do. One was sharing junk posts – where the writing was crap and the topic uninteresting – basically I didn’t want to half-ass it. It’s a requirement I believe I’m guilty of failing many times. The other thing I didn’t want to do was take a break. I’d try reading other blogs and see a static “we’re not here right now” post, and it made me angry. What was the point in not having a blog if you weren’t going to keep up with it?, I thought. Those people were lazy and I never wanted to be that type of slacker. Never ever ever. Every week since then – for four and a half years – I’ve written and shared a post. Sometimes even more than one per week. And quite frankly, […]

It’s My Birthaversary
Posted by Bethaney - Tagged , , ,

This week is my birthday — woohoo for April celebrations; it’s right when the weather is starting to get good again, after all. Which means it’s time to go outside and enjoy actual plants, even if they do make our noses run. Then the next day, after my day of birth, it is my and Bo’s anniversary. Our very first one. (swoon) Last year at this time, we went to a military ball where we got dressed up and fancy, then went home early so we could get hitched. This year, as a married couple, we’ve been apart for longer than we’ve been together. It’s a fact that sounds dramatic (and probably is). But when you ease into away-ness one day at a time, it doesn’t feel dramatic until you go back and type about it. Besides, we’re heading toward the finish line of our long-distance marriage. We are one day closer with every […]

It’s My Cat’s Birthday – Toga Turns 3!
Posted by Bethaney - Tagged , , ,

It’s time to party like it’s 2013, ya’ll. Happy birthday to Toga! Who, as you are reading this, is most likely celebrating with a long day of naps. In different positions, in every room of the house, but always somehow still in the same spots. (Like on the stair railing, at the foot of the bed, in the downstairs corner, or on the couch by the window.) He’ll also get a birthday boy treat, like tuna or wet food – but only a little cause my idea of fun on someone else’s birthday is not cleaning up puke. Especially when booze isn’t a factor. Maybe he’ll whine and meow at my feet until I pet him, hold him, or talk to him in varying intervals until his attention needs are met. (He’s very finicky about what should be done, and when … kind of like his owner.) Or he’ll crawl […]

Every Day is Craft Day
Posted by Bethaney - Tagged , , ,

It’s true, my hobbies, in my old age, are getting kind of lame. Where I once enforced a two-beer knitting rule, now it’s an it’s-after-10-p.m. rule … or I just stop crafting because my carpal tunnel is acting up. But now the lame-ness factor is only getting worse; I’m starting in on quilts and indoor gardening projects – and I even do it on the weekends. Sometimes with accomplices, other times with Toga as my only witness. I’m getting Facebook notifications for craft-based games. I’m learning that craft-based games exist. My sewing machine has taken claim on the dining room table. And the worst part is, I actually like it. Because it’s cold and because it’s deployment, I need some things to pass the time. And when those things are productive, even better. Why Netflix when you can Netflix and make a blanket to keep you cozy for the next […]

New Years Resolution for 2016: Holding Life Together
Posted by Bethaney - Tagged , , ,

Last year I made a goal to not wear real pants for as long as possible. It lasted February when, after two months of stretchy materials and no pockets, I caved and put on a pair of jeans. Like a real American. This year, however, my goal is way more ambitious … and way less petty. It’s to nut up. Of course there are the universal goals like eating better and walking after long hours behind a desk. Maybe I could work on sometimes being nicer … but mostly the other thing. Because adulting is hard, and sometimes it’s really hard. And the only way to get through it is by being busy. When the alternative is whining and complaining and essentially making it worse for yourself and everyone around, why not focus your energy on the positive and create a distraction? That sounds like a better use of time, right? Besides, my Pinterest page […]

Reasons Fall is My Homegirl
Posted by Bethaney - Tagged , , , , , ,

The term “basic bitch” may be so 2014, but for today, we’re bringing it back. Why? Because it’s fall, and hearing “basic” reminds me, almost exclusive, of everything fall. Seeing as some Internet someone decided to associate the term with everything awesome, it stuck. In my head. Where I’m reminded of every fall awesome thing. Like: Leggings Yes and yes some more. They are comfortable like a vacation for the legs. And you can wear them with baggy shirts … without feeling guilty about it. Whoever talks crap on leggings has never worn them. Or hates being great at life. Pumpkin Flavored Anything Guys, pumpkin tastes delicious. And it’s seasonal, just like every vegetable in the summer or peppermint in the winter. (All of which have a great reputation, BTW.) Let’s all stop talking crap already and leave pumpkin spice alone. Just like Britney. Scarves They’re warm. They’re comfortable. They’re […]

6 Reasons Halloween is the Best Holiday of All Time
Posted by Bethaney - Tagged , , , ,

I know what you’re thinking … it’s a bit early to be talking about Halloween. But seeing as how department stores have been flashing its décor for weeks now, it’s actually fair game. Or so the clerks tell me. As is Christmas in September, apparently. That doesn’t mean I’m pinning my costume or pre-purchasing my candy (which would obviously get eaten). But it does mean I’m ready to start getting pumped about this glorious holiday. For all of the best, and therefore right, reasons like: 6. The Costumes Some are pretty stupid, but some are pretty great. Meaning Halloween costumes are like anything in life, really. But for the great sport who’s willing to wear a full wig at work, or dress up with their kids’ costumes and match in order to take them around the neighborhood, I’ve got my eye on you. And I think you’re embracing the holiday […]
